Second Medical Opinion
Second Medical Opinion (SMO) is an additional medical consultation that is requested after a first medical diagnosis by a GP or Specialist Consultant. The objective of an SMO is to make sure that all matters have been covered, any other potential diagnoses ruled out and that the best treatment plan is prescribed. In many cases, the SMO will confirm a diagnosis or suggest only minor changes to treatment plans, providing at the very least, reassurance that the treatment being proposed has been verified as appropriate.
An SMO is delivered through a UK network of Specialists, Doctors and Consultants, co-ordinated by our own Nurse Case Managers. Case notes will be managed within our own case management system that is used in conjunction with our secure medical records holding capability, and includes SMO review, remote conferencing, face to face clinic meetings (where appropriate) and report writing.
Everyone is entitled to seek an SMO. Our SMO service is co-ordinated by our Managed Healthcare team who provide guidance and support, identify a choice of consultants through a UK network of Specialist Consultants and Treatment Providers, and will arrange a pre-agreed cost of service with the chosen SMO consultant.
